I've been a fan of Laurel and Hardy for as long as I can remember. I celebrated my 50th birthday this year and still love them as much now as I did when I first discovered them. Throughout the 70's and 80's, Laurel and Hardy's classic short films were regularly shown on television in the UK. I have great memories of growing up watching them with my parents and my sisters. That's one of the things that appeals to me about Laurel and Hardy films. EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US in the family loved them and we would all laugh out loud together when they were on. When I think of my late father, I can still see him laughing hysterically at Laurel and Hardy on TV. Watching him laugh so hard made us laugh harder too. It was the same all over the world. Families everywhere loved Laurel and Hardy. As soon as that famous theme tune (the cuckoo song) started, you would immediately stop what you were doing and go watch Laurel and Hardy. It pleases me greatly that my own kids and my nieces and nephews are all fans of Laurel and Hardy too. This is what makes them great. Very few comedy stars get passed through the generations like Laurel and Hardy do.

Back in 2005 when I first discovered the internet, I searched for Laurel and Hardy websites in an effort to find out more about them. There wasn't a lot online at that time so with the help of a couple of friends I founded The Laurel and Hardy Forum which subsequently went on to become the online meeting place for Laurel and Hardy fans, authors and luminaries from around the world. More recently we have been focusing on our social media presence with our twitter account @Stan_And_Ollie currently attracting over 64,000 followers and our facebook page LaurelAndHardyForum has over a quarter of a million fans worldwide. We share clips from their classic movies, rare audio and video clips of the boys on tour and at special events etc. We also share all the latest news and gossip about Laurel and Hardy from around the world. In 2017 we launched the Laurel and Hardy Podcast.

NEW MOVIE STAN AND OLLIE
One of my most exciting projects of late was working as a consultant on the forthcoming movie Stan and Ollie along with Rob Lewis editor of the Laurel and Hardy Magazine and notable author A.J. Marriot. The movie stars Steve Coogan and John C Reilly as Laurel and Hardy... and I have to say... they've nailed it. In my opinion this is potentially an award winning film. Beautiful acting, authentic costumes, mind blowing make-up, highly authentic recreations of the sets in flashback scenes and much more. Laurel and Hardy's real life wives are played by Shirley Henderson and Nina Arianda. Both actresses capture the wives accents and personalities perfectly.
NOT A BIOPIC

Inspired by A.J. Marriots' fantastic book Laurel and Hardy: The British Tours, the movie focuses on Laurel and Hardy's final UK tour in 1953. Jeff Pope who wrote the screenplay insists Stan and Ollie is not a biopic. When I chatted to him this week he stressed,“This is a love story rather than a biopic. The film is based on many years of research and everything you see is either a direct event or has been inspired by something that happened. I accept that I have used some dramatic licence, but always with the intention of celebrating and capturing the essence of the boys and their lives. I wanted to try and discover what made them tick individually and as the greatest comedy double act the world has seen.”

The Laurel family have previewed the movie and have given it the thumbs up. Stan Laurel's great, granddaughter and family spokesperson Cassidy Cook was a special guest at the world premiere in London in October. Cassidy said "I loved the film! It shows how in love my great granddad was with his work... his passion for life and his gift he shared with the world.. he was a true class act.. Ollie was his best friend and they spent many years being the best of friends ... this movie is a fantastic display of the love , magic and life lessons we all can relate to and go through.. it’s a love story and makes me proud to know The Boys are finally back on the big screen for all the world to see and hopefully will encourage them to go watch and research their original films that my great granddad not only starred in but helped write and direct."
I believe Stan and Ollie will appeal not only to lifelong fans, but also to new fans who are about to discover Laurel and Hardy for the first time thanks to this movie. If you portray an icon and you don't get it right, the fans will come down on you like a ton of bricks, but I truly believe Jeff Pope, producer Faye Ward, director Jon S Baird and all involved in the making of this movie have done a wonderful job in capturing the essence of the relationship between the real Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy and the result is a beautiful tip of the hat to the finest comedy duo the world has ever seen.

Steve Coogan and John C Reilly give delightfully bang-on-target performances as comedy’s most famous double act as they enter their twilight years. In 1953, several years after their last film and with their immense celebrity on the wane, Stan ‘Laurel’ and Oliver ‘Hardy’ embark on a gig tour of British seaside towns and music halls.
Laurel and Hardy in 1953

Surprised by the modesty of the bookings and cramped little guesthouses, the tour starts off subdued. They struggle for audiences and their booking agent seems disinterested. But a series of TV guest spots and celebrity appearances soon rekindle the country’s interest in their genius and the buzz grows as they head towards a big London finale. As the attention builds, so too do old resentments, coming to a head as they’re joined by ‘the wives’, Lucille and Ida (Shirley Henderson and Nina Arianda, a hilarious double act in their own right). Coogan and Reilly fans know their brilliance as physical comedians, but to watch them here is a revelation; they nail body language, mannerisms and also routines the duo would have known in their sleep after decades performing together. Craft is sublime throughout, crystallised in an audacious opening with each department dazzling in a six-minute tracking sequence captured by Laurie Rose’s camera team.
Sony Pictures Classics Confirms Details Of Steve Coogan-John C. Reilly Laurel and Hardy Drama ‘Stan And Ollie’ – Toronto

Sony Pictures Classic has confirmed Deadline’s previous scoop on the multiple territories deal for Stan and Ollie, the Laurel and Hardy drama.

Sony confirmed the following details on the deal:

Entertainment One’s (eOne) Stan and Ollie has been acquired for distribution by Sony Pictures Classics for multiple territories including the U.S., Latin America, Eastern Europe, China and South Africa. eOne will distribute the film directly across its footprint. eOne’s Sierra/Affinity handled international sales on the film with CAA Media Finance representing domestic rights.

The film is directed by Jon S. Baird from a script by Jeff Pope and stars Academy Award® nominees Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly. It is produced by eOne, BBC Films and Faye Ward via her Fable Pictures banner. eOne and BBC Films financed the feature.

The film has been designated as the closing night film of the 62nd BFI London Film Festival on October 21; with SPC planning a theatrical release qualifying the film for 2018 Awards consideration bolstered by the performances of Coogan and Reilly. The film will be released in the U.K. on January 11, 2019.

Stan and Ollie follows Laurel and Hardy, the world’s favorite comedy double act, who set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As they set out, crisscrossing the country, attendances are disappointingly low. But they’ve always been able to make each other laugh and as the charm and beauty of their performances shines through their audiences laugh too, and they re-connect with legions of adoring fans, old and new.

The transaction comes as eOne is bolstering its in-house production activities with the recent acquisitions of The Mark Gordon Company and Sierra/Affinity. eOne is involved with 14 films playing at this year’s Toronto International Film Festival including A Million Little Pieces, Wild Rose, The Death and Life of John F. Donovan, and Vox Lux.

EXCLUSIVE SEPT. 7, 8:28 AM: In what looks to be the first deal on the ground here at the Toronto Film Festival, a sale is near for Sony Pictures Classics to acquire multiple territories including domestic on Stan and Ollie, the John S. Baird-directed drama that follows the legendary comedy duo Laurel and Hardy, during their 1953 variety hall tour of Britain which began with low attendance and eventually became a hit with old and new fans. The film stars Steve Coogan as Stan Laurel, and John C. Reilly as Oliver Hardy, the iconic comedians. Stephanie Hyam, and Danny Huston also star. Jeff Pope wrote the script.

This is one of many films eOne is involved with at Toronto, as the company ramps up its output in tastemaker fare.

Sources said SPC is mulling a plan to launch in this Oscar season, to take advantage of the strong performances by Coogan and Reilly. Buyers sparked to a screening of the film yesterday morning at the Yong-Dundas Cineplex #10. Producing is eOne, BBC Films, and Fable Pictures. Faye Ward produced and Xavier Marchand exec produced.

CAA and eOne-owned Sierra/Affinity are repping the film but haven’t commented, nor has SPC. Stay tuned.

The film, which will close the London Film Festival on Oct. 21, is set to screen for buyers in Toronto on Thursday morning following a successful sneak screening for Academy members in Los Angeles.

Stan and Ollie, Jon S. Baird's tone poem about the late career of the comedy team of Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, which stars Steve Coogan and Oscar nominee John C. Reilly, respectively, won't be publicly unveiled until Oct. 21, when it has its world premiere as the closing night film of the 62nd London Film Festival. And the movie, produced by eOne, BBC Films and Fable Pictures, doesn't yet have an American distributor. But that could change after it screens for buyers in Toronto on Thursday morning as the industry converges on the 43rd Toronto International Film Festival. And if it is acquired by a distributor who guarantees a 2018 release, it could factor into this year's Oscar race.

Stan and Ollie chronicles the aging comic duo's trying tour of English variety halls after World War II, and the tender but tenuous relationship that kept them together through many ups and downs. The film screened for a select group of Academy members in West Hollywood on Aug. 27, with The Hollywood Reporter the only media outlet in attendance, and it — and particularly the performances of Coogan and Reilly, and the makeup and hairstyling that make them look like spitting images of Laurel and Hardy — couldn't have gone over better, based on conversations at the post-screening reception.
"The film is terrific," public relations branch member Bruce Feldman told me. "Beautifully made and very funny. I've talked to a lot of other members and they also seemed to like and appreciate it very much, especially those two great performances. Those performances are as good as any Oscar-nominated performance could be." He added, "It would be a shame if more people don't get to see it."
Arnold Schwartzman of the documentary branch was born and raised in Margate, England, and still remembers seeing, when he was age 11, Laurel and Hardy come to town as part of the very tour chronicled in the film. "It brought back some very happy memories," he said. "It didn't have the same pizzazz as seeing them in the movies, but I did enjoy it very much. I thought it was excellent. They [the actors] both looked the part and had all the mannerisms of the originals."
Many Academy members could probably also relate to the film's depiction of what it's like for an artist after the roar of the crowd has faded but one's desire to create art has not — when one does what one must in order to keep doing what one loves. (This idea feels timely in a week in which former Cosby Show actor Geoffrey Owens was shamed for having to bag groceries in order to earn enough money to continue acting.)

Should Stan and Ollie be picked up in Toronto and slated for release before the end of the year, it would be entering the race later than the rest of the field — but that isn't necessarily a handicap. Last season, Neon's acquisition of I, Tonya during TIFF, and the film's subsequent commercial and Oscar success, offered a reminder that a savvy distributor can take a good movie far into awards season even if it only acquires it in the fall.
Moreover, the best picture recognition garnered last season by Darkest Hour, which also rolled out in September, shows that, for all the demographic changes to the Academy in recent years, there remains a sizable constituency in the group that responds to traditional period-piece dramas and what might be called 'good old-fashioned filmmaking.' (Coogan knows them well, having starred five years ago in Philomena, which wound up with a best picture Oscar nom.)
And since the best actor race itself is still relatively open, there could be room for Reilly and/or Coogan. Reilly is already set to make the rounds in the coming months on behalf of The Sisters Brothers, Holmes and Watson and the Wreck-It Ralph sequel Ralph Breaks the Internet, and could plug Stan and Ollie, too.

Consulting with eOne on the rollout of Stan and Ollie are a host of former Paramount marketing, publicity and awards specialists — Megan Colligan and Perception PR's Lea Yardum, Gena Wilder and Julie Tustin — whose association with the film also bolsters its credibility as a potential contender. It was only seven years ago that they helped to propel another film about a show-business figure who was largely forgotten late in life — Hugo, which tells the story of the silent film director Georges Melies — all the way to the Dolby.
I worked as a consultant on this movie and am delighted to announce on behalf of the 62nd BFI London Film Festival in partnership with American Express® that STAN and OLLIE will be this year’s Closing Night gala. The World Premiere of STAN and OLLIE will take place on 21st October at the Cineworld, Leicester Square, attended by Steve Coogan and John C. Entertainment One (eOne) and the BFI London Film Festival are also pleased to announce that there will be simultaneous preview screenings of STAN and OLLIE taking place at cinemas across the UK.

STAN and OLLIE is the true story of Hollywood’s greatest comedy double act, Laurel and Hardy. Brought to the big screen for the first time and starring Steve Coogan and John C. Reilly as the legendary movie icons, STAN and OLLIE is the heart-warming story of their journey around the UK and Ireland in what would become the pair’s triumphant farewell tour. Despite the pressure of a hectic schedule, with the support of their wives Lucille (Shirley Henderson) and Ida (Nina Arianda) – a formidable double act in their own right – the pair’s love of performing, as well as love for each other, endures as they secure their place in the hearts of their adoring public.
BFI London Film Festival Artistic Director, Tricia Tuttle says, “We’re delighted to be closing the BFI London Film Festival with this beautiful tribute to cinema’s early comedy odd couple, Laurel and Hardy. A truly funny and touching film about a tender life-long friendship, Jon Baird’s film is also a must for movie fans, exploring the twilight years of two mega-watt performers who had a meteoric rise to fame. These two prove that true comic timing is eternal, and it’s a perfect end to the Festival as the BFI looks ahead to our major UK-wide Comedy Genius season this Autumn, as well as a month-long Laurel and Hardy season at BFI Southbank in January.”

STAN and OLLIE Director, Jon S. STAN and OLLIE, at its heart, is a love story between old friends, who just happen to be two of the most iconic comedic characters in Hollywood’s history. Laurel & Hardy, the world's favourite comedy double act, set out on a variety hall tour of Britain in 1953. Diminished by age and with their golden era as the kings of Hollywood comedy now behind them, they face an uncertain future. As they set out, crisscrossing the country, attendances are disappointingly low. But they've always been able to make each other laugh and as the charm and beauty of their performances shines through their audiences laugh too, and they re-connect with legions of adoring fans, old and new.
The tour becomes a hit, but Laurel & Hardy can't quite shake the spectre of Stan and Ollie’s past; and long buried ghosts, coupled with Oliver's failing health, start to threaten their precious partnership. A portrait of the most tender and poignant of creative marriages begins to unfold as the duo, aware that they may be approaching their swan song, try to rediscover just how much they mean to each other.

Director Jon S. Baird says: "Like so many others I grew up watching Laurel & Hardy and I'm therefore honoured to help bring this incredible true story of love, laughter and friendship to the big screen.”
'Stan and Ollie' director Jon S. Baird said last night: “At the heart, it’s a love story – it’s a true love story between these two guys who were best pals.
“When I was doing research on these two guys, I was watching clips from some of their old films. My young daughter – who was about four at the time – walked into the room and just burst out laughing.
“She had no idea what I was doing, or who they were. But that strong, visual comedy never dies. People hold them in such high regard.”
Mr Baird, whose television collaboration with legendary Hollywood director Martin Scorsese and Rolling Stones front-man Mick Jagger, “Vinyl” premiered last week, also rebuffed questions about Mr Coogan’s suitability.
He said: “He’s a trained and very skilled actor. Steve was my first choice. I met him a while ago and he knows the character inside out.
“He’s very serious about playing this guy and I couldn’t think of anyone better.
“Stan Laurel was a workaholic and his whole life was dedicated to making people laugh. Steve understands that, he understands how difficult that is.”
Mr Baird added: “Laurel and Hardy have passed away but their legacy lives on. You’ve got to be very respectful towards that. We’ve got a responsibility to their family and fans.”
Primary filming on the film, which charts Laurel and Hardy’s swansong variety hall tour of Britain in 1953 – is due to begin later this year.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com2Scotland, UK55.825973254619015 -4.21874800000000553.567936254619013 -9.3823220000000056 58.084010254619017 0.94482599999999461tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19153635.post-24476233605833205402015-11-05T03:23:00.002+00:002017-10-13T23:47:22.591+01:00Top 20 Laurel and Hardy VinesANOTHER VINE MESS

In 2014 I sent this tweet from my twitter account @stan_and_ollie

It wasn't until someone tweeted back "but where can we see them in a cinema?" that I realised no mainstream cinemas were showing the boys films and that something had to be done. I knew Stan Laurel's 125th birthday was coming up in June 2015, so I made some enquiries via twitter. I tweeted Showcase Cinemas and asked them if they would be interested in showing Laurel and Hardy in their cinemas which resulted in an email from their director of event cinema who quickly embraced the idea. It wasn't long before other cinemas such as Vue, Perth Playhouse, SGC and Movies@ jumped on board.

So... this June, kicking off in Liverpool on June 1st, there will be a Laurel and Hardy double bill screening of County Hospital and Sons Of The Desert in selected cinemas across the UK and Ireland. Some cinemas are even screening the films on 16th June, Stan Laurel's 125th birthday.

The demand for these screenings has been overwhelming not only here in the UK & Ireland, but also throughout Europe and the USA, so we're already planning on more screenings worldwide later in the year.

The last big revival of Laurel and Hardy was back in 1975 when they reached number 2 in the UK charts with ‘Trail Of The Lonesome Pine’, held off from the number one spot by Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’. Even into the 80’s the BBC regularly showed the Laurel & Hardy classic shorts on BBC2. Since those days, apart from loyal fans from ‘The Sons Of the Desert’, (the international L&H appreciation society) flying the flag, there has been virtually nothing in recent years to introduce younger generations to Laurel & Hardy. The aim of these national screenings is to invite families to come to the cinema… grandparents, mums, dads and the kids. We want to encourage people to put down their ipods, tablets, iphones and laptops for a couple of hours and come along and enjoy good family entertainment in the company of Laurel & Hardy... in a cinema... with a packed audience! The way they were made to be seen.

What started as a single tweet has turned into the beginning of the biggest Laurel and Hardy revival since 1975. What better way to introduce the boys to the next generation!

To everyone on Twitter, Facebook and to those of you out there who have bought tickets. Thank you for your support.

Ross Owen
Event Coordinator
www.LaurelAndHardyRoadshow.co.uk

When preparations were underway for yet another UK tour, it was discovered that Ollie, as an American citizen, was unable due to immigration laws to work in Britain again until a year had elapsed from his previous engagement there. Luckily, a scrutiny of the small print suggested that, should they enter overland from the Republic of Eire, he would be able to work in Northern Ireland before the year was up.

So with that in mind, Stan and Ollie docked at a small port in Cobh, Southern Ireland on the 9th of September 1953 expecting a low key reception. Things couldn't be further from the truth. Despite minimal publicity, it had somehow gotten around town that the boys were coming, and they arrived dismayed to find the harbour crowded to capacity with men, women and children all cheering for their heroes, with the sound of the "Cuckoo Theme" ringing from the cathedral bells, barely audible amid the cheers and horns blasting from other vessels in the harbour. Stan and Ollie were barely able to keep their emotions under control.

The tour kicked off and had the boys starring as a couple of whisky tasters. With a motto like: "The more we drink - the more we earn", it's inevitable that Stan and Ollie are destined for calamity. And thus, they soon wind up in the mental ward of the local County Hospital!!

This was brought about when a severely drunken Ollie had declared that he was "as happy as a lark", and after claiming that he was so joyous that he felt "fit to fly with the birds", he went on to tumble through a window headlong into an imaginary river down below (with the obligatory "two-buckets-of-water" trick utilised to suggest this effect).

The rest of the play had a very familiar theme. Ollie in a hospital bed, icepack on his head and his arm in a sling!

While enjoying his comfortable rest from the turmoil of everyday life, all is going well - then Stan shows up at visiting time. It's not surprising that he bears a gift of hard boiled eggs - although this time he passed on the nuts of earlier fame.

"What's that?" asks Ollie after spotting a brown paper bag under Stan's arm. "I brought you some hard boiled eggs and a nice onion and jam sandwich" Stan explains, to Ollie's horror. "Now why did you bring me an onion and jam sandwich?" Ollie deflatedly asks, "you KNOW I can't eat that!"

"Why not?" asks a frowning, puzzled Stan, "you always said you liked jam, and you like onions too. I remember you said...", being cut off mid sentence by an irate Ollie "Oooooh!"

"I do, but not together!!" Ollie retorts, throwing up his arms in despair. This time, it was the adoring audience who Ollie turned to, rather than the camera, to slow burn his sarcastic, "Onion and jam sandwich... Mmmmmph!!"

After some shenanigans with the eggs, bed pans and water jugs, a nurse enters the ward to check Ollie's chart which reads: "for the attention of Doctor Beserk. Patient think's he's a bird. Advise immediate frontal lobotomy and dissection of the cerebellum."

Ollie gulps in fear of something going tragically wrong in the operating theatre, but the scatty nurse reassures him, "Oh don't worry Mr. hardy, Doctor Beserk's operations are always successful..." Ollie gives a relieved sigh before she adds, "even if the patient dies!"

Ollie's fear turns to terror as Stan nonchalantly gazes on as an undertaker enters the ward with a tape measure to measure Ollie, "Just in case!".

"That does it!!!" exclaims a more than frustrated Ollie, who's clearly heard enough. "We're getting out of here!".

"I think you're right Ollie," Stan nods in a semi nervous tone before helping Ollie out of bed and through the wards open window. Behind him, the nurse has re-entered and is silently looking on with a scowl. Stan sees her, tips his hat, then continues climbing out to join his pal on the ledge before doing a double take and motioning Ollie back in.

Ollie, all coy and twiddling his thumbs climbs back into bed just before Doctor Beserk comes into the room. Stan is also in bed, having mistaken the nurses instructions to "get in bed" as being aimed at him too.

"And who is the patient?" asks a puzzled Doctor Beserk, Stan smiling his famous tight lipped grin and pointing at Ollie ... who then realises that he's sharing his bed. Ollie angrily pushes Stan out of bed. The doctor and nurse help Stan to his feet, and he tells them, "I'm not the patient! He's the one who's insanitary!"

An enraged Ollie goes into denial, in order to escape his inevitable fate at the hands of the seemingly incompetent Doctor. "How DARE you make such a statement?" he retorts to Stan in an upper class accent. "Why, I've never seen you before in my life!! My name is Ticklebottom!" he hastily adds.

"Then what are you doing here?" asks the doctor. "I came here to visit a relative and got into this room by mistake, " Ollie's lie continues as he gulps at the laughing audience.

The doctor, believing Ollie begins laughing, only to be joined by Ollie and then Stan. They all laugh uncontrollably for a while with Ollie managing to blurt out among his chuckles, "Who ever heard of anyone thinking he's a bird?". The doctor agrees and tells him he's free to go. But as the nurse pulls back the sheets for Ollie to get out, she notices two hard boiled eggs, accidentally dropped in the bed earlier by Stan, and along with the doctor she reverts back to believing the story. Ollie lets out an "ooooh!" as the two staff lumber him back into bed and Stan throws his arms up in bewilderment.

Ollie's cries of "I didn't lay them eggs - he brought them" go ignored and the audience cheer loudly to his timeless retort: "Well, here's another nice mess you've gotten me into!" followed by Stan's famous sob, "Well i couldn't help it!"

The sketch comes to a surreal end as the doctor gives Ollie a potionto determin "What kind of bird you think you are - a canary or a buzzard!" The potion has a strange effect on poor Ollie who jumps out of bed chirping just as two pigeons covered in egg shells emerge from the bedside cabinet.

Ollie flaps his imaginary wings, Stan frowns as if still trying to figure out why Ollie doesn't like his sandwich and the doctor and nurse double take in disbelief. The orchestra strike up a closing fanfare as the curtain falls and rises to the bowing stars - to a standing ovation.

<span style="color: white; font-family: "georgia" , "times new roman" , serif;">(below) The boys perform their 'BirdsOf A Feather' sketch on stage in 1954

Eventually the tour hit England, opening night being in Northampton before moving to Liverpool, Manchester, London, Newcastle and Birmingham, where John McCabe was in the audience. He met the boys backstage that night and the result was a long friendship culminating in his 1961 autobiography "MR LAUREL AND MR HARDY" and the formation of the still active "SONS OF THE DESERT" fraternity for Laurel and hardy fans worldwide.

The show closed in May 1954 at the Palace in Plymouth, prompting a review in the local EVENING HERALD the following day:

"Laurel and Hardy look a little older and are not as boisterous as they used to be - perhaps because Oliver Hardy was suffering from a chill and had to have penicillin treatment before the act last night - but all their old cleverness and that delightful craziness is still there."

It should have been in Swansea on the 24th May that the tour concluded, but the 17th in Plymouth turned out to be the boys final performance. The following day Ollie was told to cancel by real doctors, most unlike Doctor Beserk of the sketch, as he had suffered a minor heart attack. Worlds away from the fantasy world of laying eggs and chirping...

Stan declined offers from the remaining venues to continue alone. "I am completely lost without Ollie," he told them, "We do comedy sketches - situations. I'm not a gag man".

Ollie recuperated enough to return home a few days later and the tour was terminated. The duo took a leisurely twenty day cruise to L.A. on the 30th May, embarking from Hull aboard the merchant vessel SS MANCHURIA, on a tropical journey over the Atlantic via the Panama Canal.

WE WANT TO PLAY LAUREL AND HARDY
Ross Owen: Mat can I begin by wishing you all the best of health. You had your fans worried for a while there. How are you now?
Mat Horne: Thank you. I am taking this rest period to recuperate and recharge and it is working.
Ross Owen: It was recently reported in the press that you are a fan of Laurel and Hardy, can you remember when you first saw them?
Mat Horne: As a very young boy. My brother was and is completely obsessed by them and I grew up with Laurel & Hardy. When I began my career it was in a double act and I am in one of sorts now and I attribute my love for Laurel & Hardy to that.
Ross Owen: Do you have a favourite Laurel and Hardy film?
Mat Horne: My favourite film is an odd choice, I think, but it contains a scene which I believe to be one of the funniest sequences I've ever seen. Also, I love the ultra-surreal aspects too. It's Blockheads. Stan pulling the blind down in the stairwell, that are only shadows, the cigar-smoking kid with the broken voice in the lift and of course the football down the stairs!
Ross Owen: What appeals to you about Laurel and Hardy?
Mat Horne: The skill as performers. The bravery of much of the surrealist material (for that era). The classic traditional qualities of both the stories and the relationship. I think it is their relationship which gave me an innate understanding of reacting, rather than acting per se, within a given situation/relationship with another character.
Ross Owen: Are you influenced by them at all in your act with James?
Mat Horne: Very much so. James and I are very different performers, as were Stan & Ollie. But they played to their strengths as performers, which unquantifiably complimented each other. I'd like to think myself and James do this.
Ross Owen: Is it true you would like to one day play Stan Laurel? There's certainly a resemblance.
Mat Horne: I'd love to play Stan, but I'd have to lose a bit of weight!! I think I'm a bit old now and it's been done on BBC4, so probably never going to happen!!
Ross Owen: I know the fans would love to see this happen. How did you get into the world of showbusiness and what made you decide on a double act?
Mat Horne: I was a stand up, in a double act. I have always, because of L & H, been interested in collaboration and working with another as a performer.
Ross Owen: Who else influenced you?
Mat Horne: Steve Coogan.
Ross Owen: Comedy has changed so much in recent years. Do you think Laurel and Hardy should be back on television?
Mat Horne: Aren't the films repeated all the time anyway?! They always seem to be on on Bank Holidays and half term.
Ross Owen: Yes, they appear occasionaly on cable/sky TV but not so much on terrestrial TV as they did when we were youngsters. Do you have a question about Laurel and Hardy for us?
Mat Horne: How much sway do you have getting me to play him in a biopic?
Ross Owen: aha great question, one must respect anyone who takes on the role of an icon, because if they get it wrong, the fans are on them like a ton of bricks. However, we have discussed this topic on the Laurel and Hardy Forum and when you and James got suggested as contenders the response was very positive. Many top authors, writers and filmmakers visit the forum so, as we are home to 1000's of fans worldwide, indeed we may have a slight influence somewhere. If filmmakers value the opinion of the fans that is. OK, One final question Mat... What is your favourite scene in any Laurel and Hardy film?
Mat Horne: In Flying Deuces, where they're locked in the cell and Stan starts playing the bedsprings like a harp. Pure, surrealist genius. Oh and the Blockheads scene where the football is kicked down the stairs and it hits the hotelier in the face causing his hair to flop forward, again.
Ross Owen: Great choices Mat. The ball scene with hotelier Harry Strang (above right) is one of the most popular with fans too. Thanks for taking the time to do this little interview. It is our mission at the forum to keep the memory and the works of Laurel and Hardy alive, we thank you for your support. "A little kindness goes a long way." Both yourself and your brother will be made most welcome at the forum. Good luck with all your future projects.
Mat Horne: Thank you, it's my pleasure.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-19153635.post-72045457542126841412009-10-19T21:51:00.001+01:002015-01-20T18:33:26.694+00:00FATHER TED'S CONNECTION TO LAUREL AND HARDYCreator Graham Linehan sets the record straight
